Relationships between Aries and Capricorn

Aries's egoism is the thoughtless egoism of a child, who achieves what he wants by any means, although life teaches him to curb Mars enthusiasm and not to rush headlong. Capricorn's egoism is of a different kind. As you can see, Capricorn has little chance to flutter through life with the naive cheerfulness and innocent simplicity of Aries, at least until he passes the age called "middle". Then time will turn back for Capricorn, and he can soar higher than Aries. That is why Aries finds it easier to find a common language with older Capricorns; young ones simply infuriate them.

Aries establishes relationships with people, obeying the impulse of feeling. Capricorns are driven by more earthly motives. Sure, they are offended by the astrologers' assertion that people ruled by Saturn tend to enter into marriages of convenience, but astrologers are not so far from the truth. It is not prudence, but foresight. After all, Capricorns are worried about their unborn children.

Well, my daughter Jill is a Capricorn. She is wiser than her mother since the day she was born. And not only wiser, but calmer and more practical. Did I say that she is also more cautious? I started taking Jill with me when I went shopping for Christmas quite early. We started this little holiday tradition when Capricorn was only eight.

There has never been a Christmas before that I did not forget money or half a dozen presents on a counter somewhere and did not discover it only in a crowded elevator on the way to the twelfth floor. Finally, I decided that I was pestering St. Anthony (who is known to return lost things) too often, and I entrusted his mission to little Capricorn. It always worked. So we made a bet. Of course, it was a small one - Capricorns never make big bets - and we went through her closets. We found nothing but black (with scanty white trim), dark blue, dark green, and brown. At last she triumphantly produced from the very back of the closet a wild, canary-yellow overall, carefully wrapped in brown paper and reeking of mothballs. I fixed her with a stern Martian look, and Bobs admitted, blushing: "I only wear it at home, but it was so cheap..." Being a typical, honest Capricorn, she knew that the fourteen cents we had wagered were rightfully mine, and she handed them over on the spot.

Capricorns have a delightful ability to look facts in the face, to curb their faults, and to make the best of their virtues. Most Aries would do well to be a little more like them in this.

Speaking of overalls and all that, Bobs claims that her eighty-year-old Capricorn neighbor wears short skirts and modest high-necked, long-sleeved blouses. "Well," she says, "the legs last the longest." So it would be a mistake to think of all Capricorn women as prim and proper matrons.

Capricorn men are not always as prim and proper as one might think. Not being burdened with an excess of idealism like Aries, they can sometimes throw out a knee. However, in private, Capricorns are still conservatives, at least in public.

Aries often accuse Capricorns of being heartless, but this is not entirely fair. It is simply that Capricorns are stingy in giving out their tenderness and compassion, saving them for those they consider worthy.

Cooperation between Aries and Capricorn can be fruitful if they do not butt heads.

Imagine a mountain goat, gracefully jumping from cliff to cliff and able to satisfy its appetite with rare tufts of tough grass. Nothing will delay its slow but sure progress toward the alluring summit of truth, wisdom and justice.

Now imagine a stubborn ram nibbling the juicy grass in a pasture. Steep cliffs are not for him. Blooming green space is much better!

For Capricorn, the top of the mountain is the only place where he feels safe. An Aries who manages to climb so high will feel infinitely lonely.
