The mainland is located mainly in the western and southern hemispheres on planet Earth. In the west, it is bounded by the Pacific Ocean, in the east by the Atlantic, in the north by North America, and the border between the Americas runs along the Isthmus of Panama and the Caribbean Sea. The general picture of the mainland is as follows: its western part is mountainous. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world. In South America, its eastern part, there are mainly lowlands and plateaus. Mainland South America is home to a wide variety of people, cultures and languages. The Caribbean Islands are located in North America and are not part of South America. Mainland countries that border the Caribbean - including Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela - count as Caribbean South America.
