The city (since 1781) is located on the river Istra. Known since the XVI century. First as the village of Safatovo, in 1589 it was renamed into the village of Voskresenskoe in the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. In 1930, the city was renamed Istra by the name of the river flowing through it.
