XVIII century Smolensk was founded in 1759 as a settlement of retired Cossacks and servicemen. It received its name from the redoubt of the Smolensk Mother of God (Odigitria), in which there was an office dealing with the affairs of military settlers, who made up the bulk of the population of the village.
