The deep-water Bay of Vanin (named after the military topographer Iakim Klementevich Vanin) was opened in May 1853. The urban settlement is located on the western shore of Vanin Bay (the Tatar Strait), at the eastern tip of the Soviet-Havana Highlands of the Sikhote-Alin Range.
