The city is located on the river Atmis. Kamenka was founded in the early XVIII century in the area of the ancient stone ford across the Atmis River on the way from Penza to Nizhny Lomov and Tambov, and even earlier, apparently, from the Golden Horde town of Ukek (now in Saratov) to the town of Mohsi (Narovchat). On this ford and received the name of the village.
