Mariinsky Posad is located on the right bank of the Volga River. The first mention of Sundir refers to 1620. The village got its name from the name of the river on whose bank it arose. In Chuvash, the Mariinsky Posad is still called Sӗntӗrvӑrri, which means "the mouth of the Sundry". The word "Sӗntӗr" comes from a mountain man. Shyndyr (the river Sundyr), which consists of words - "shyn" - "river, water source"; "Holes" / "tyr" - "edge, shore".
