The city is located on the river Zusha (the tributary of the Oka). Mechensk (Mtsensk) was first mentioned in the Nikon Chronicle in 1146 under the name (Mtseneks, Mtsnesk) as part of the Chernigov principality. The name came from the small river Mtsena (Metzna), which flowed into the river Zusha, on the bank of which towered the fortress.
