Tarsus (formerly Tarsus), (tur. Tarsus, other Greek Ταρσός, Armenian Տարսոն, Tarson) is a historical city in the south of the central part of Turkey, part of the Adana-Mersin agglomeration (tur. Adana-Mersin Büyükşehir Bölgesi).
Settlements on the territory of Tarsus have existed since the Neolithic. Tarsus was the chief city of Cilicia in antiquity.
The city is located in the southeast of Anatolia on the Cilician Plain, now called Chukurova, 20 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The river Berdan-chai (tur. Berdan Çayı) or Tarsus-chai (tur. Tarsus Çayı) flows through the city, flowing from the Taurus Mountains and flowing into the Mediterranean Sea. The name of the river in the II millennium BC. e. unknown, but in ancient times it was called Kydn (ancient Greek Κύδνος, lat. Cydnus).
