Located at the confluence of the rivers Lena and Kuta. Russian pioneers appeared at the mouth of Kuta in the late 1620s. The settlement was founded at the mouth of the Kuta River (from the Evenki Kut - "wetland"). Hence the name. Ust-Kut has become an important transport hub in the development of Siberia and the Far East.
