The first mention of Kargopol in written sources dates back to 1380. The name of the city is a semicomcle - a phenomenon characteristic of the toponymy of the Russian North, when the substrate Baltic-Finnish name is translated into Russian by half. The second part of the word Kargopol is translated approx. pelda "field". Regarding the first part of the name there are several versions:
Cargo - in the northern dialects of the "crow", therefore, the cargo field - the "crow field";
From Karelian Karhupeldo "bear side". Kargopol was a traditional icon-painting center: the icons written here differed with a special Northern letter.
