The city is situated on the river Kan (a tributary of the Yenisei River). Founded in 1628 as a small redoubt near Caen Komorowski rapids on the river Kan, 43 km below the present Kansk. In 1636 moved to its present location. As Krasnoyarsk, a city built as a fortification against the raids of the Yenisei Kyrgyz. In 1717 in Kansk twenty families were relocated from Krasnoyarsk Cossacks.
