The first mention of the Epiphany parish on the river Mstera, referring to the fiefdom of princes Romodanovsky, found in the scribal books for the year 1628. At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries, iconographic fishing began in Mstera. In 1923, the icon painters-handicraftsmen N. P. Klykov and A. I. Bryagin organized a small artel, Old Russian Folk Painting. In 1931, a larger gang "Proletarian art" was created, uniting Mstera artists and former icon painters who worked in the technique of lacquer painting. One of the most important industries of Mstera is embroidery of laces.
