The city is located on the right (high) bank of the Kuban River opposite the place where the Laba River flows into it. In 1778, in the area of the mouth of the Lab, the fortification, which was part of the Kuban line, was laid. The original name - Alexander fortification, Aleksandrovsky (Ust-Labinsky) redoubt. In 1793 the construction of an earth fortress was completed under the direction of General Gudovich, named Ust-Labinskaya.
