It is located in the upper reaches of the Karatal River in the foothills of the Dzungarian Alatau, at the confluence of the Kora (Karoy, Karinka), Chazhi (Chizhi, Chizhinka) and Tekelinki rivers. The town of Tekeli was laid at the foot of the Dzhungar mountains in the late 1930s at the site of a large polymetallic deposit.
