Taishet was founded in 1897 in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, as a small township of Taishet. The name of the settlement was received by the location on the river Taishetka (right tributary of Biryusa). The name of the river, in turn, comes from the Ket language: the "cold", the "river".
