The city is located on the river Gzhat (Volga basin). The name Gzhatsk comes from the local name of the river Gzhat given for the rusty shade of the waters. In 1703, at the direction of Peter I, it was founded as a pier on the river Gzhat (called the Gzhatskaya dock).
