The beginning of the settlement (initially to the village) was due to the creation in 1757 of the Vyksa Iron Ore Plant, founded by the Batashev brothers, who came from the Tula craftsmen. Not far from the plant and settlements there was a small river Vyksun (or Vyksunka), where the name of the village came from.
