Berdyansk city located in the North Sea of Azov on the east bank of Berdyansk Bay in the northern part of the Sea of Azov. The territory of modern Berdyansk was inhabited in ancient times. On the outskirts of the city, in the tract Sweet Estuary and the Middle Spire, studied the remains of two settlements of the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age (III millennium BC. E.). In the beginning of the XVII century, there already existed a settlement Verdi, which in November 1827 with administratively subordinated Nogai.
