The city is located on the river Inya (tributary of the Ob). Once the Toguchin land, hidden behind impenetrable forests, was a haven for runaway peasants who came here in the beginning of the XVI century, and later the Old Believers. One of the most ancient villages of the district - Kiik - was founded in 1530, even before the campaign of Ermak.
