Kirovograd is located on the Dnieper Upland, in the valley and on the banks of the river Ingul (tributary of the Southern Bug), at the confluence of the rivers Sugoklei smaller and Bianchi. Initially, the city was named Elizabethgrad named Fortress, which was founded in 1754. The fortress was named in honor of St. Elizabeth. In 1784 the fortress was abolished.
