Il Tunceli borders Erzincan in the north and west, Elazig in the south, Bingol in the east.
The territory of the province is covered with mountains. The spurs of the East Taurus mountain range stretch from west to east. On the border with the Giresun, Gyumushkhane, Bayburt and Erzinjan silts, there are spurs of the Black Sea ridges. In the north lies the desert range of Munzur (Merjan) with peaks above 3300 m. Some of these peaks are covered with snow. The mountains get lower and lower towards the south. Mountains and valleys are covered with forests.
